Great Buffalo stopped, realizing he was confused and had not been paying attention to the direction he was walking. There was definitely a path, indicating travel by others. He studied the shadows and got his bearings. While no longer lost, Great Buffalo still felt very confused.

Was Rabbit's God really Mother Earth? And if true, why was this the first time that Great Buffalo had heard of this Superior Being. Why did the trees, flowers, bushes, and the sort understand the Mother Earth thing, while the buffalo family never heard such a story.

The voice came from above him. "Buffalos live in the Present," Squirrel's tail was twitching, snapping the air, as he stared down at the buffalo.

"You reading my mind?" Great Buffalo asked.

"Well, how else was I going to know what you were thinking?"

"Why do you care?"

"It is my job.

"Your job? What do you mean?"

"I maintain balance. And, you my friend, are considering making a huge change to the balance of All-That-Is."

"Why do we not know about Mother Earth?" Great Buffalo asked.

"Think of it this way. You buffalo have no enemies. Your fur keeps you warm in the coldest of times. The hump on your shoulders keeps food available in the time of scarce grasses. You represent the most perfect of Mother Nature's creatures. Buffalos do not need to think in terms of Past of Future. You live in a perfect Present. The Past is for those who must learn tricks and ways of surviving. The Future is for those who need to know there is another meal in the future. Buffalos just exist in the Present, a perfect Present."

Squirrel continued, "The fact is, Mother Earth may have chosen you to take another leap in understanding. In the scheme of things, a being who could dream while awake would make sense." Squirrel suggested.

"But, everyone seems afraid of the dangers such a being could present. Perhaps, I should not meddle with All-That-Is."

Squirrel began a rapid fire "Tisk, tisk, tisk. To think such a way is really dangerous. You have begun a journey that will take us all to another place. To stand still, in the middle of the journey, could doom us all. The All-That-Is can never just stop."

"So, I cannot go on without danger and I cannot just stop without danger. Can I just turn around and go back to the heard and graze on grasses without worrying about a purpose to living?"

"That you can do," Squirrel concluded.

"I can," Great Buffalo said with a cheer in his voice. "O.K., I will just turn around." Great Buffalo thought about this for awhile. He looked up to Squirrel and asked, "Why can I go back without danger?"

"Because it is where you came from. You can always go back to what was. But, that will be the end of the story."

"Ah, ha!" Great Buffalo shouted, "I knew it could not be that simple." He thought some more and then asked, "What do you mean it would be the end of the story?"

"A perfect buffalo life. Perfection. End of story." Squirrel lay out on the limb of the tree and closed his eyes.

Great Buffalo got the picture. "Boring?"

Squirrel jumped up, "Boring, yes, boring."

Great Buffalo had to admit that his life had been tending toward monotony.

Squirrel continued, "Sooner or later, a decision is made that brings movement to the All-That-Is."

Great Buffalo recalled the Bush and Flowers telling of the beginning, with the energy threads choosing to leave the perfection of the Great Void and enter into the Nothing Place.

Squirrel jumped up on the trunk of the tree, hanging from it in a perfect balancing act. Squirrel finished, "You just have to keep being Buffalo. Take the easiest path. Honor all other beings. Do not push. Use that massive head of yours to plan for a Superior Being able to dream while awake. Give your creation the tools needed to insure continuation of the Future and a sense of balance.

"It is really no big deal, for the most perfect of Mother Earth's creatures. Plan and plan well," Squirrel winked, whisked his tail a few times, and then ran off squawking squirrel language. Pretty soon the whole forest was full of squirrel squawks, coming from every direction.
