The sun had replaced the moon light over the forest. Great Buffalo saw the bird, and knew it was too large to be Crow. He wondered if Crow was still on his back, when all of a sudden there was this wing fluttering and scratching and picking and the buffalo had no doubt, Crow was just waking up too. "Good morning, Crow," Great Buffalo said softly.

"Good morning," replied the bird.

The small wolf voice was nearby when they heard, "So, you are both awake. I will tell Grandfather," and the young wolf was off running.

It was a very good day, that second day of Great Buffalo's odyssey. Crow had flown off early, although Great Buffalo caught glimpses of him, from time-to-time during the day. The meadow that had greeted the buffalo was one of plentiful and varied grasses, which he spent a long time enjoying.

Dog joined Great Buffalo and together they went to the center of the Wolf Pack territory. The buffalo was introduced to Dog's daughter and her mate and the other grandchildren, still living at home. There were other members of the pack who showed up throughout the day. Great Buffalo knew there was a strong tie to family within the Wolf Pack. There were also well defined territories that belonged to the family. As he remembered, the wolves had a very structured way of interacting. Each wolf knew where he or she was on the ladder of life.

There was always one male and one female at the top who were the leaders. Below the leaders the older wolves and then the stronger wolves had varying degrees of leadership. At the bottom was the youngest wolves, who were cared for by all of the others. The leaders were seldom autocratic nor bossy. Most decisions were based on what had been done before. Wolves were rather ritualistic in their day-to-day activities. Even play between the elders and the young were a combination of movements and tail wagging, head gesturing, small yelps, looks, and posturing that were all designed to teach communication and hone athletic skills.

Great Buffalo knew that unlike himself who had many mates, wolves spent their lives faithful to only one mate. Dog had said his mate had died many years ago. The wolf had not gone beyond that fact.

The day was spent down at the lake, the most magical place Great Buffalo had ever seen. Water in the form of rivers were a requirement for life, to quench the thirst of the Buffalo Heard. The rivers cut through the plain providing life giving water and creating tasty grasses. But, the large body of water found on the high ground was a place of many interesting animals, plants, and flowers not seen along the river. They had spent hours playing and watching others play along the banks. The wolves even ventured in for swims. Great Buffalo waded along the shore, loving the feeling of water on his legs.

The two old friends were laying down, enjoying the sun. Great Buffalo asked, "Dog, why do you howl at the moon?"

Dog replied, "To honor the spirit that made the moon which lights our way."

"Is that Mother Earth?" Great Buffalo asked innocently.

Wolf actually growled, saying, "No. Never. Mother Earth is a harsh and unforgiving Spirit."

Great Buffalo had not anticipated this reaction. He had never seen Dog so upset. "I am sorry, if I offended you," Great Buffalo said humbly.

Dog mellowed immediately. "Not your fault."

The two were silent for a long time, before Dog told the story.

"I know you get upset with our need to kill for survival. It was not a decision we made. It was how Mother Earth created us. We must kill to live. I tell you true, Young Buck, it is nothing we like doing. That is why we target the old and weak. We do not attack healthy animals, unless we just have to.

"And, that vicious, seeming craziness that we show when hunting is to stun our prey in fear, so death for them comes without fight. We try to kill with little pain or worry from our victim.

"My mate was a most marvelous being. She was an excellent mother and a great hunter. She could become the most terrifying creature. Yet, we all know her as a peaceful, loving, funny person who cares more for her family then herself.

"She was coming back in the dark, with her sister, when the snake bit. She was not his food. He just killed to kill. He also is a creation of Mother Earth."

Great Buffalo noted, "I see what you mean. The Tree Family did not think of Mother Earth in such bad terms. They said she was to be honored as the creator of All-That-Is."

"She did not create the Moon, did she?" Dog asked.

With surprise, Great Buffalo confirmed, "Well, no I would guess she did not. Who do you suppose created the Moon?"

Dog replied, "The being we honor with our howling."

"Ah, I see," Great Buffalo replied, but he was not sure he did see. He took a chance, asking, "Would that be God?"

Wolf turned quickly, studying his friend, asking, "What do you know about God?"

"Just what Rabbit said about God being the source of all life. What do you know about God?"

Dog smiled, remembering, "It's the Fish thing."

Great Buffalo smiled, also remembering, bringing back the images from Young Buck's mind.

They were on the far side of the lake, watching a parade of colorful fish, swimming beneath the surface division between water and air. The pup asked his companion, the young buffalo, "What do you suppose it is like to be a fish?"

Young Buck was always amazed at the crazy things Dog would think about. As usual, Young Buck answered, "I don't know."

Dog continued, "I put my head underwater once, trying to see what it was like. When I took in a breath, the water choked me until I thought I would not survive. I can not imagine how they live down there."

Dog's words made Young Buck remember seeing Bear hunting along the river and tossing a fish onto the shore. The fish jumped around for along time before it lay quiet. The young buffalo walked over and studied the motionless fish which seemed to be gasping for air. Young Buck thought it was like the fish could not breath. After a while, the fish just got completely still.

Young Buck had not thought about this image since it happened.
Young Buck told young Dog about the fish on the shore.
