The Quest

Dog turned away from Tortoise, to ask Great Buffalo, "What are you up to, Young Buck?"

Great Buffalo told Dog the story of the last two days. He explained how Hawk had led him to question his reason for being; and how Owl had sent him to Bear, who explained dreaming and remembering the future. The discussion with Lizard led to a quest to create a Superior Being who could dream while awake.

Dog stopped Great Buffalo there asking, "Why would you have a reason for being, by creating a Superior Being that can dream while being awake? What's the connection?"

"When Deer dies so you can live, what do you think of Deer?" Great Buffalo asked in return.

Dog replied with a reverence in his voice, "I thank her and promise to take her energy inside myself to become a better wolf."

Great Buffalo said, "When I die, I want everything about me to go into creating something more, something better. I want my meat to be food for a Superior Being, my fur to be a blanket to keep them warm, my skin to be dried into a covering to protect them for daily living, my hoves to be melted into a glue that can hold together the pieces of their daily lives."

Dog grunted, saying, "Sounds to me like you are pretty full of yourself. While realizing buffalos are the most perfect of Mother Earth's four-legged, sounds to me like you would have you, yourself become a truly Superior Being."

Great Buffalo hung his head, saying softly, "No, it is not like that, Dog." Great Buffalo now told the story of creation as related to him by the Bush and Flower and Tree People. He explained the Energy Threads that left Great Void's perfection for something more. As best he could, Great Buffalo told about the Black Hole in the center of the stars and how Mother Earth began creating, first as a sphere of gas, and then liquid metal, and then growing a crust for the Stone People to live on which also became home for water, plants, birds, animals, fish, insects and more. Finally, he explained the next step in Mother Earth's evolution into a higher state of consciousness.

"You see, it is not my need to create, it is Mother Earth's need to evolve. I understand that now. Mother Earth has created all versions of plant, animal, reptile, fish, birds, bugs, and stones. But, each is limited to their own experiences and ways of seeing things. A new creature needs to be created which can raise their consciousness to a place where they can truly understand what it is like to be all other beings.

"Turtle and Fish can only discuss what the other sees. We need a Superior Being who can truly know what all others see and feel and think. This is not my quest, Dog. This is the quest of all who have gone before. We are all just pieces of Mother Earth. We need a Superior Being with the capacity to bring it all together, to understand the fullness and diversity of All-That-Is. We need someone who can dream while awake."

The two friends, confidants, and now philosophers, sat alone in their thoughts. Finally, Dog said, "And, by giving yourself as everything this Superior Being could want, this new creation could do what, beside dreaming while awake? Dreams create the future. Would they be capable of creating a future of their own choosing? What would that mean to the rest of us?"

"Yes, that is the problem. In creating this Superior Being, Mother Earth and everything she has created before is at risk."

"And, how exactly is this creation suppose to happen?" Dog asked.

"That is why I am on my way to see Lynx, The Knower of Secrets," the buffalo replied.

Dog recalled, "I saw Lynx once. Boss and I took a long trip to the high mountain. I think he wanted to ask Lynx something, but, I was just a little guy and did not pay much attention. It was a great trip. Maybe the best," he mused in recalling the wonderful time he spent with his father Boss.

A moment later Dog added, "I would go there again. Sure. Young Buck, I will take you to Lynx."

Great Buffalo became full of joy. "Oh, Dog, that would be wonderful. Are you sure you want to do this. It is outside your territory, is it not?"

"My territory is being taken over by my daughter and her mate. Soon, I will have to give up my role as leader. You are saving me from a fate that is worse than death," Dog laughed and howled, "A trip to see Lynx. Yes!"

Dog jumped up, saw Tortoise, ran over and nudged the shell. "Take care of yourself Tortoise"

Tortoise replied, "And, you two remember to limit Superior Being's Time. Do not let them live forever."
