They decided to resume their journey the next day. Great Buffalo prepared by stuffing himself with grasses and water. Dog went on a hunt to gorge himself with whatever animal was willing to give its life so he could live. Crow did what crows do. They knew food would be scarce for the next few days. Lynx lived in the rocks above, where grass would be difficult to find. Hunting grass or rabbit would be dangerous because of the rocky, steep climb. And dangerous, as the Mountain Lion lived in these territories. And, for Crow the threat could come from the air with the silent swoop of an Eagle. With arrival of the first sun rays, the three were well on their way. For most of that day, the view was the same, with Crow perched upon Great Buffalo's horn, and Dog leading the way. Late in the day, Dog, turned saying, "Strange we have not seen any others, today." "Yes," Great Buffalo shouted back, "No one has been around." The buffalo looked ahead, where the trail was leading. By tomorrow they would be on the rocky, high ground. |

The sun went down and the moon filled the sky, but Dog did not howl. They were outside his territory and danger could come at any time. He did not sleep well, although, his companions did. The sun came up and they again began moving cautiously up the steep trail, worked into the hard surface by Elk and Goats who lived up here, although they were no where to be seen. They climbed all day, to where the young Dog had gone with his father Boss, to see Lynx. "It is here, I tell you," Dog said climbing and scampering over the rock and the ledge, in front of a cave. "Lynx is in the cave, I tell you." "Well, Dog, I cannot climb in there. You go, find Lynx. Ask if we can talk," Great Buffalo commanded. Dog cautiously went over to the opening of the cave. "Hello, anyone in there? Lynx, it is Dog. May I and Great Buffalo have a moment of your time?" Silence responded. Dog looked back at Great Buffalo and Crow. "O.K. I will take a look," he said to his companions. Great Buffalo chimed in, "Well, maybe you should not go in there. Maybe it is a place of the Mountain Lion. Maybe Lynx does not live there any more. No, this is crazy. Come down from there. Let's just forget this whole thing." Great Buffalo was not scared. Well, not scared for himself. He was suddenly terrified for his friend Dog. Nothing was worth putting Dog in danger." |
|
"Well done, Great Buffalo!" The voice came from the image that had been the entrance to the cave. Dog jumped back, momentarily landing on Great Buffalo's back. Crow just hung on tighter to the horn, while the buffalo just stood there, dumfounded. Lynx continued, "You just had a dream while awake. You imagined Mountain Lion killing off your friend Dog. Well done." Great Buffalo took many moments before muttering, "I did. Yes, I guess I did." He realized Lynx was surrounded by greenery and laying on a living tree limb. The buffalo wondered how this could be, in a place where no such things exist. |
"Your transformation has begun. You have felt fear. You have felt fear of loss. It is not something Buffalo feels very often, is it?"
Great Buffalo murmured, "No, Sir."
Lynx continued, "I move easily between Time and Space. Sometimes I am here and sometimes I am somewhere else. In this way, I can answer any riddle, any mystery. You wish to assist Mother Earth in evolving a creature having an expanded awareness. Well, before you can do so, you must expand your own awareness. Great Buffalo, you must walk the earth and find out what makes every living thing special. Then, and only then, will you see a Superior Being who dreams while awake."
Great Buffalo was overwhelmed. This sounded like an impossible task, "This is impossible," he moaned.
"Your decision," Lynx replied, while starting to disappear.
"No, wait," cried Dog, Crow, and Buffalo together.
Lynx became solid again, while saying, "Ah, a team. Teamwork is always the best way around impossible situations, don't you agree?'
Dog asked, "What happens then, after we know what makes everyone special. What happens then?"
"A little early to ask, don't you think?" Lynx said with amusement.
Dog persisted, "What happens? How does this Superior Being get created? How? I do not want to have to trudge back up here just to have you answer that final question."
Lynx replied slowly, "When you have found what is special in everything that Mother Earth created, Crow will tell you how to create a Superior Being."
Dog and Great Buffalo yelled with surprise, in unison, "Crow? Crow!"
Crow
fluttered up and flew to Lynx. There was obviously a conversation going on,
although Great Buffalo and Dog could hear nothing.
Dog asked, "You hear anything?'
"No."
A few more minutes went on before Lynx said aloud, "I see." Turning to look at Great Buffalo, Lynx said, "The only reason I spoke with you, was because Crow was your companion. Now he tells me you do not know who he is or what he knows.
"Makes one wonder how you would have gotten this far if Crow had not joined your quest. Same situation, though. You find out what is special about everyone else, than Crow will tell you how to create your Superior Being." Lynx got a sly look to his face, finishing, "Of course, the last being you will come to understand would be Crow." A moment later, Lynx was gone, replaced by the opening to a cave, and Crow was fluttering in mid air.
