They did not say anything. Crow took up his position on the horn of Great Buffalo. Dog led the way, downward. It was getting late and they needed to get to a safer place to stay the night. It was then they saw the shadow moving across the path ahead. |
| "Crow, get down," yelled Dog, but Crow was already behind Great Buffalo's ears, hiding in the tuft of fur, from potential death flying above. |
| Dog was looking up and saw the source of the shadow. It was Eagle, flying in a darkening sky, an unusual sight. And, because he was looking up, Dog did not see Snake until he was almost stepping on it. |
It was the surprise at seeing his most hated enemy before him, that made Dog freeze. He was not particularly frightened. Dog did not jump back, the ledge was narrow and he did not want to spook Great Buffalo, who could easily loose his balance and fall to his death. They all just stood in absolute stillness. Great Buffalo had also seen Snake. Crow was only trying to hide. No one was looking at Eagle as he silently slid from the air, struck, and was airborne again.
"Close call, Dog," Great Buffalo said.
But, Dog was already walking again.
It was only after they had gotten to a fairly safe place, for the night, that the two talked about the eagle and the snake. Great Buffalo asked, "What is special about Eagle?"
Dog answered, "Eagle kills snakes."
"But, Dog, not all snakes are bad. Snake is powerful energy. Snake symbolizes transmutation."
"Yes, and some snakes can transmute you into a dead buffalo."
Crow squawked a laugh.
Great Buffalo asked, "Well, Crow, what do you think? Lynx seems to think you know quite a bit."
"Actually, I know very little. Lynx is the Knower of Secrets. I am simply the Protector of Secrets. What I do know is that my enemy Eagle killed Dog's enemy Snake. Should be some significance in that, don't you think?"
Dog asked with frustration, "What exactly makes something significant? What are we suppose to figure out. If we have to go through this analysis with every confrontation of another being, we will never see this thing through to some end. None of us will live long enough."
Crow answered, "Eagle flies so high as to see everything."
Dog prompted, "Sooo, so what?"
Crow replied, "A good day versus a bad day, depends on what Eagle decides to do with what it knows from seeing everything."
Dog grumbled, "I'm going to sleep." He looked over at Great Buffalo and noticed the big beast was already sleeping. "What have you gotten us into, Young Buck?"
