Bear was sitting under the Honey
Tree, enjoying the late afternoon. Great Buffalo had not been out to Bear's
home in a long time. Bear was glad to see him coming up the hill and through
the trees. "What brings you out here, Great Buffalo?"
"Looking for you, Bear. I want to know how you can walk on two legs. Where did you get this power?" |
|
It is not power. It is knowledge that gives me the right to stand upright and see further than all other four legged. During the long Winter, I dream the Future. From time-to-time I must look down the road, toward the setting sun, to see if the Future is what I dreamed. The Future is far away and I must stand high to even glimpse its outer ridges. If the Future does not look like the Dream, it is my job to know this." "Is it your job to fix it?" Great Buffalo asked, watching Bear stand up. "No, that is not my purpose. I simply dream the Future and watch to make sure everything is as I dreamed." Bear stood, with a faraway look in his eyes, towards the far horizon. |
|
Great Buffalo joined Bear in looking to the horizon. "Where does the Future come from?" wondered Great Buffalo.
"Future
comes from the Great Void. Everything that exists has its beginnings in the
Great Void. I dream the Future and Great Void molds itself into that image."
"Don't we all dream? Why can't we all effect the Future?"
"The only way to control the Future is to be able to enter the Dreamtime and remember. I can remember my dreams and my dreams become the Future."
|
Great Buffalo was truly astonished. "As simple as that Bear? You control the Future because you remember your dreams?" "As simple as that, Great Buffalo. As simple as remembering my dreams." "How can I remember my dreams?" Great Buffalo demanded. "You would have to ask Lizard about all
that. Lizard is the Keeper of the Dreamtime. Go see Lizard. Ask her how
you can remember your dreams. Ask Lizard." And Bear turned and walked
away. |

|
Great Buffalo traveled to the Great Stone Fall where Lizard would be sunning herself amongst the Stone People. And indeed Lizard was lying on a large rock, basking her dry skin in the sun. "What is it?" she asked without any introduction. "Bear sent me to ask you about remembering my dreams." Great Buffalo replied. "Only Bear can remember the Dreamtime." And Lizard turned her head away, closing her eyes. "But we all dream, don't we?" |
|
"Yes, of course," Lizard replied without bothering to look at Great Buffalo. "But only Bear remembers the dreams. Dreaming brings us to where Future lives. Only Bear has a reason for remembering the Future. Bear's purpose is to dream the Future into being." "So no other being can remember the Dreamtime?" a disappointed Great Buffalo asked. "No other being?" Lizard asked, turning her head toward the great four-legged. She scurried over to be closer to the buffalo, "What sort of being?" |
|
Something in the way Lizard's words hung in the air, made Great Buffalo suspicious. He cautiously replied, "Oh, I don't know. Other than Bear, what sort of being would be allowed to remember the Dreamtime?
Lizard smiled at Great Buffalo's astute questioning. The First Rule of the Universe was, that a correctly worded question must be answered by a direct and simple answer. Lizard answered, "Bear dreams while asleep. A being who could dream while awake, would be allowed to remember the Dreamtime."
Great Buffalo's heart soared. A being who could dream Future while awake, would be a most superior being indeed. "Lizard, would such a being exist?"
Lizard smiled, hissing, "Nooo."
"Could such a being be created?" Great Buffalo asked with anticipation.
"That is something I could not comment on, even if I knew. Ask Lynx. Lynx is the keeper of the Secrets. Lynx would know if a creature could be created who could dream while awake. Go ask Lynx."
