Dog and White Buffalo spent their last days visiting old friends and enjoying every little thing that happened. But, Dog was getting tired. White Buffalo knew their time was coming to a close. "Dog, I thought maybe we should go see Bear. What do you think?" |
Bear would show them where to take the final sleep. Dog knew this. White Buffalo knew this.
As they started out on another, last journey, Dog said, "I want to Shape Shift with you."
"What would you change into?" White Buffalo asked.
"I think your naked, puny, creations are going to need a loyal companion."
Great Buffalo agreed, "Yes, I am sure that is true. I will go to the Dream World and call for Crow. I will ask him if this is possible."
That night, as Dog's tail drummed, White Buffalo went into the Dream State and got permission for Dog to Shape Shift into a companion for the Superior Being. Crow explained what would happen. It made White Buffalo smile, at the simplicity of the whole event.
The next day, Bear showed them to his hibernation cave. That night, Dog howled at Moon, one last time. Together the buffalo and the wolf laid down beside each other. They could see the Full Moon shinning outside the cave entrance, and beyond the sparkling of the stars.
White Buffalo said, "One thing I am still puzzled by, Dog."
"What would that be?" Dog asked.
"Is there a difference between Mother Earth and Rabbit's God?"
Dog replied, "Sure is."
"What," White Buffalo prompted.
"God made the Moon."
White Buffalo thought about this and finally asked, "Why are you going to Shape Shift, Dog?"
"Someone has to remember the beginning."
White Buffalo replied, "Crow says everything I have learned about the significance of Mother Earth's creations will become a memory in the Superior Being. This beginning will be remembered."
Dog countered, "Not that beginning. I am talking about the beginning of the Beginning."
White Buffalo was puzzled, "Sorry, I don't get it."
"I want to go and be companion to them, because I can remember the significance of God."
White Buffalo was stunned. He had walked with Dog beside him, through danger, thirst, cold, and hunger and still his friend could surprise him. "What is the significance of God?"
"The difference between Mother Earth and God, is that God was always there. God is the force that travels with every Thread of Energy that travels from the Great Void to experience All-That-Is from the tiniest to the biggest. God made the Moon to light our way through the darkness of the Nothing Place. To put it simply, God is loyalty."
"So what is this companion to the Superior Being going to be like?" Great Buffalo asked.
"He will be like a wolf, of course. Capable of protecting, and hunting, and mostly being loyal. And, they will call him Dog, but they will not understand the significance of this name. But, Dog will all ways there, ready to show them the secret of God."
White Buffalo should have known the answer before he asked, "What is the significance of the name Dog?"
Wolf laughed, "White Buffalo, what do you have if you spell Dog backward?"
White Buffalo laughed, "G-O-D. It spells God!"
"Yes, and it spells loyalty."
They fell asleep together, and traveled through the veil, where Crow was there to meet them. They took the thread of energy tying them to their dying bodies and they breathed into the thread a new beginning. Each white hair on the buffalo transformed into a naked being who could walk on two legs. They would be called the "Two Legged" or humans. Each hair on the wolf transformed into a four legged companion called dog. Together, the dogs and naked humans moved from the cave, to climb outside into a new beginning. It is said, the first thing to greet them was a dove.
