Dusk was falling and Crow came to perch on Great Buffalo's horn. "What do you think you are doing?" the great beast demanded.

Crow answered, "I have forsaken the safety of the flock to assistance you on your quest. In darkness, I am prey to the silent flight of Great Owl. Put simply, I need your protection."

Great Buffalo replied, "Well, hang on. I intend to go as far as I safely can while there is enough light." In all honesty, Great Buffalo was a bit annoyed. He could not actually feel the tiny crow feet on his great horn. But, he knew the little bird was there. That was annoyance enough.

"You would have eaten Butterfly if she was not poisonous," Great Buffalo said.

Crow was about to respond when he suddenly found himself surrounded with, "HELP, spider web!"

"What?" Great Buffalo stopped and turned his head. His horns were covered in spider web.

A second voice was screaming in Great Buffalo's ear, "STOP! My web is being destroyed!"

With both Crow and Spider squawking, Great Buffalo gently moved back, extracting his horns from the spider's web, saying, "So, sorry Spider, I did not see your web. Forgive me."

Crow screamed from Great Buffalo's horn, "Forgive you! You have me completely covered in this stuff. I will never get it all off. Forgive you, ha!"

Spider was much more understanding, "Yes, I understand, it is getting dark and all. Not to worry. I will get to work making it all right. Do not fret yourself."

Spider continued, "Why have you searched me out?"

Great Buffalo replied with surprise, "We were not looking for you. We are looking for Lynx."

"Great Buffalo, no being just stumbles into my web. Either you are food or you are searching for creativity. I represent the source of creativity. My intricate and most beautiful web signifies the flimsy separation between dimensions. Is my web the thin strands that tangled your friend Crow or is my web the space between?"

"Well, I really do not know," replied the contemplative Great Buffalo. "What is the answer?"

Spider replied, "That depends on which dimension you live in. Do you live on the thin strands making the web or do you live within its strands? No being can answer that for you."

"I want to live wherever the magic of creation lives."

"What do you want to create?"

"A superior being capable of dreaming the Future while awake."

Spider pointed out, "That could be a very dangerous being, indeed."

"Dangerous? How?"

"Anyone who could dream the Future while awake, could dream their own dreams. They could dream what they wanted to see become the Future. It would not be like Bear who dreams the dream that come silently in the night from a pure source," Spider was almost whispering, as she continued, "the First Source, the Beginning of the Beginning."

Great Buffalo did not know what to say. Buffalos only think in terms of what is best for the herd. Crows were somewhat more independent, but they had to work for the best for the flock. Spider, on the other hand, lived alone. Great Buffalo had even heard that some female spiders killed and ate the male after mating. So, Great Buffalo asked, "Why would someone dream a Future that would be anything but good for everyone?"

"Why do you buffalos live in herds and crows in flocks? Let me answer for you. You do this because you see it as the most secure way of going through life. You have great individual strength, but out here alone and away from the herd, you alone can be taken by other animals working together. While one wolf may leave you alone, a pack of wolves can kill you without much effort. Without the herd, even you, Great Buffalo, are vulnerable.

Spider continued, "I, on the other hand, have no one except myself to depend upon. My strength is in myself and no other. If I could dream a Future that would benefit me to the determent of another, I would do so. It is in my nature to do so."

Great Buffalo thought before saying, "Then my Superior Being will need to work in a herd for survival. They will have to work together to get food. They will be individually weak, needing shelter and warmth. Yes, I will create beings who will work together to dream a Future where all will benefit. Thank you Spider. Thank you very much."
