Cemetery Headstones,
Nancy Hopkins
The cemetery in Oxford, Massachusetts has stood since at least
1775, the oldest tombstone I found.
This stone was placed
in 1787 and the man
buried had been a
soldier in the
Revolutionary War, as
indicated by the small,
circular monument with the flags.
The headstones were mostly simple statements with
the names, dates of birth and death and often the ages. Many had images that
were either angels or suns with wings. Many others had a willow type tree with
an urn or the urn alone as the image.
Some headstones stood alone with no apparent family nearby. Others were buried, one generation after another, side-by-side.
One
man had four wives. The first three to the left were wives 1-3. Then came the
groom. The last one, to the far right, was of his last wife.
