New York Yankees, Miracles Still Happen- A Dedication to New York, by Nancy HokinsNew York Yankees, Miracles Still Happen- A Dedication to New York, by Nancy Hokins

In the dark days following 9/11/2002, most of us were just searching for "normalcy". I found myself watching the Little League World Series, which was soon followed by the World Series of Major League Baseball between the New York Yankees and the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Diamonbacks went on to win the series, but there were two nights in New York when the Yankees beat all the odds....

Miracles Still Happen -
A Dedication to New York
Fall 2002

When I was just a little kid,
the sand lot was the park.
Guys and gals and balls and mitts and bats that hit their mark.
I learned the way of life, those days
Between home runs and double plays,
How teammates help each other out with sacrifice and saves.

The days of childhood passed on by,
Adulthood came to stay,
And then one bad September day
Clouds took the sun away.
Oh, the days of summer had passed me by.
The life of sun seemed done,
Shattered in one moment when 3,000 souls had gone.

The towers broke like shattered mirrors
And life was full of awful fears,
Mingled with the painful tears
Of life, now, full of strife.
And then I thought I heard a cheer,
Something from my childhood years,
When life was full of sun and light and everything was right.
Fall had come as it had done,
With strikeouts and the long home runs,
The Yanks were in the series once again.

The Snakes they thought they were the best,
Put the Yankees to the test,
Two games down and just one day of rest.
The Yankee stands were full of smiles
As they beat them Snakes by a New York mile,
Two games Snakes and one the Yanks
And two to play at home.

Fourth game had the Snakes up three,
The Yankees just the one,
They tied the game and in the tenth
Derick hit the run.
Fifth game came out just the same
Losers till the ninth
When Scotty hit that curving ball with all his Yankee might.

One man on, the sacrifice,
And one long hit to right.
Another win, another cheer
Broke the New York night.
What happened on those two bright nights
Was more than just a game,
Both wins were miracles by any other name.
I'm sure I heard 3000 silent cheers
Challenging the Yanks a test
To teach one thing to all the rest,
That miracles still happen.
